Sony Set To Disable Blu-Ray Playback On PS3 Consoles

With it’s new tag-line “It only does everything”, Sony is riding on the success of it’s latest marketing campaign. Determined not to let this opportunity slip out of its hands, this fall Sony will adopt the new tag-line “It only removes everything” with the launch of firmware 3.5 that disables blu-ray playback. Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, had this to say when asked about the upcoming firmware:

Sony Computer Entertainment Is Not The Same As Sony Computer Entertainment

Now Sony is renaming Sony Computer Entertainment to Sony Network Entertainment Platform only to absorb the company into Sony and then split off its Gaming business into a new company called Sony Computer Entertainment while Sony Network Entertainment, SCEA, SCEE, and SCEI watches from abroad.

Video: Sony Qriocity On-Demand Video Service

You may have read about Sony’s Qriocity name patent and now you know what it is for. Qriocity is their On-Demand video service, akin to Microsoft’s Instant 1080P streaming service for the Xbox 360, that is speculated to release Feb 2010. Unfortunately, no one knows if this will be heading to the PS3 but one can imagine (hope) that it will. Instant streaming is certainly welcome as it is something I have wanted from the video store, besides lower prices, for a while now. I will say it again, if I can get a comparable OR decent monthly subscription plan to their video store, I will drop Netflix.
