Welcome back to the week in news! Once upon a time I used to do a daily recap of events linking you to various news story around the world. That got out of hand. Then I started to do a weekly recap of events. That got out of hand once again. Now, I am learning to master the web and will now provide you with a link to my saved news items of the week! Last week Sony launched the Digital Comic reader with the PSP 6.2 firmware update even though the official store launch is not until December. To help celebrate the launch PS Comics and IDW Publishing has given away free codes to redeem on your PSP.

Getting Started

Upon boot-up you will be shown your most recently read comic with the option to resume. You can also browse your collection, view recently added comics, view unread comics as well as bookmarks you set. The app is very fast and responsive to your selections.

The first comic I started with was Astro Boy, followed by a little of Aleister and Star Trek. Considering I only finished Astro Boy, I was impressed by the autoflow presentation of zooming in and out of comics. This allowed me to read the panels in order as they are meant to be read. It wasn’t until I got into Transformers where I really became impressed.

The Transformers comic continued the panel zoom in as the others did. It also moved throughout panels like you would expect in a motion comic. When it got to a panel where there was an explosion and people running, the Digital Comic app, shook the screen to simulate what was happening in the comic. That is when I responded “Now THAT is cool”. It’s the little things that gets me going.

The reader also allows you to play music from your memory card while reading. I didn’t test this out as all my music is on the iPhone and my PSP memory card isn’t that big. The only problem I have with the reader is that I am left without more comics to read until December.

PSP update 6.20 is set to go live tonight and with that update a new version of Media Go has been released. What’s new to both are Digital Comics for the PSP. The European PlayStation.Blog interviewed Wormwood comic creator, Ben Templesmith, about his comic and the service.

Digital Comic service is set to launch in Dec 2009.

In preparation of the PSP 6.20 update, a new Media Go update is available. For those that don’t know, Media Go is an iTunes like application that you can use to manage your music, games, and photos for the PSP. You can also access the PlayStation Store within the application.

Media Go Version 1.3

• Bonus digital copy from purchased DVD or Blu-ray Discs can be transferred to PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) systems.
• Comics purchased through the PlayStation® Store can be transferred to PSP™ systems (requires PSP™ Update version 6.20).
• Video and photo playlists can be transferred to PSP™ systems (requires PSP™ Update version 6.20).
• Media Go can check for PSP™ Updates and copy them to PSP™ systems.
• The new Downloads view can be used to monitor the status and manage the progress of downloadable content.
• An Advanced Transfer option provides customized encoding options for transferring media to a device.
• Control playback and see transfer progress of Media Go in the Windows® 7 taskbar.
• A new reel has been added to the large-screen view to make it easier to quickly navigate your media.

Most interesting is the ability to check for and download PSP system updates once it is connected to Media Go. Another feature that did get me excited was the Downloads view. I was hoping with this update that I would be able to queue downloads but was sad to find that the PSP must still be connected to Media Go for a download to take place. The system also restricts you to one download at a time which is painful for users looking to purchase and download multiple items to their PSP or PC.

Another title that I am looking forward to is a Crack In Time. The Crank demo was recently released on PSN and this week the Ratchet demo will be released. Another title that peaked my interest was Forza 3. Unfortunately, I will be holding off from this title as I do not plan to renew my Live account anytime soon.
