Why Do You Write So Much?

Last week I decided to take a writing course at work to refresh some of my skills. As I stated before, I write a lot at work. While I was writing a novel today, I ran across the following in one of my reference books:

Why Do You Write So Much

Creative/academic
more words = higher grades
more words = more dollars

Business
fewer words = more impact
fewer words =more dollars

In that instant, it flashed on what type of writing I have done. When I was younger I used to love writing short stories. They were never more than a few pages but it was a way for me to express my thoughts as a child. I then moved on into writing poems, which later transformed into songs. I have written hundreds of songs in various forms. Some were complete, some incomplete, some nothing but weird dots and lines that I used to signify the music pattern which gave me the lyrics. I had gotten very used to writing short and concise stories.

In high school, my song writing came to a stop and was then replaced by business writing. Junior year in high school, I began working full time in IT. There I started writing reports and technical documents. I then began to train myself to not write so technical due to my constant communication with business teams. Overall, I feel my business writing has vastly improved over what it used to be. I feel that I am a very good writer and I put myself as being a top writer on my team. I’ve even been appointed to review others emails on a daily basis before they went out to management. That was definitely an ego boost :-)

This explains one of the issues I have with reviews. I rarely read game reviews. When I do, I quickly become annoyed as the writer uses flamboyant phrases, and insane hyperbole. Not to mention words, that have been extinct for ages, being used to show their vast knowledge of the English dictionary. When I read reviews as such, all I can see is an attention whore crying out. No offense to any of these writers, because you are clearly showing your skill and are doing what is required of you. It is just that my years of writing less, and to the point text have ruined me from enjoying such creative writing. Thus effectively not letting me execute it successfully.
