Hamilton continued to impress with his second Formula One race by pulling off an incredible drive. After qualifying the grid set out to be Ferrari, McLaren, Ferrari, McLaren… Felipe Massa took pole with Alonso sitting right beside him. Raikkonen started 3rd and Hamilton 4th. At the first turn, Alonso got around Massa, and Hamilton got around Raikkonen AND Massa with an impressive and forceful inside turn on the first corner. Massa, dropping back two spots, was now under pressure to pass Hamilton and catch Alonso before he pulled further from the group. Massa’s first attempt should have told him to stay calm as Hamilton was unfaded an continued to drive on the limit. Massa’s second attempt to overtaking Hamilton sent him off track and Hamilton off into the distance. Massa then spent the remainder of the race behind Nick Heidfield in the BMW.
Raikkonen, did what I expected. He showed many that he CAN nurse a car when needed. As you may not know, Kimi experienced overheating issues during the last leg of the Australian GP. Instead of replacing the engine and suffering a 10 spot penalty, Ferrari decided to continue with the engine. Kimi, drove a conservative race, kept the car out of sticky situations, kept the engine intact and made a safe drive throughout the entire HOT race. Though, the mechanics may have been happy with the performance of the engine because we can only assume they told Kimi to turn it up. With Hamilton being 8+ seconds ahead of Kimi…the IceMan started to gain ground by .5 sec per lap. Maybe Ferrari was too late in giving Kimi the go ahead because all he needed was 1 lap to pass Hamilton. Instead we finished the race by filling Hamiltons mirrors with red.
Overall, great drive by Hamilton. Massa continues to confirm my assumption of him. Kimi is still my boy and I can’t wait for the next race 4/15/07!
